FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Council for Professional Recognition

Statement Regarding Threats to Head Start Funding

As the Board of Directors of the Council for Professional Recognition, we wish to address a critical issue impacting our community of educators, advocates, and early childhood professionals. Recent reports indicate that the White House is contemplating a complete elimination of Head Start’s funding, which would deprive nearly 800,000 children of essential early education, nutrition, and health services. Such a decision would not only jeopardize the future of these children but also result in significant job losses for dedicated educators.

For nearly 60 years, Head Start has provided safe and nurturing learning environments for children from vulnerable communities, enabling parents to pursue education and fully engage in the workforce. The potential elimination of this program could force many parents, particularly mothers, to withdraw from the workforce or delay their return, exacerbating economic instability in already challenged communities.

Head Start educators, many of whom hold the Council’s Child Development Associate® Credential, would face unemployment should funding be withdrawn.

Historically, Head Start has enjoyed bipartisan support due to its proven effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and substantial return on investment. The program’s benefits include improved school readiness, enhanced family engagement, reduced reliance on social services, and better long-term educational and economic outcomes.

Our board, leadership, and staff are committed to ensuring that all Council stakeholders understand the significant accomplishments we have achieved together and the consequences of losing such a vital program.
