WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Council for Professional Recognition, the nonprofit organization that supports early childhood education professionals and administers the Child Development Associate® (CDA) credential, and the Latino Child Care Association of Maryland (LCAM) announce a first-of-its-kind agreement that will increase the number of Spanish-speaking early childhood educators earning the CDA.

The organizations will collaborate to inspire and engage Spanish-speaking early childhood educators in Maryland through outreach efforts about the CDA, the most widely recognized credential in early childhood education (ECE) and a key stepping stone on the path of ECE career advancement. The CDA is based on a core set of competency standards that guide early childhood professionals toward becoming qualified educators of young children.

According to the 2020 Census, 12% of Maryland’s population (roughly 744,000 people) are Latino. In addition, the Census found that 8.9% of Maryland residents speak Spanish at home.

Dr. Calvin E. Moore, Jr., CEO of the Council for Professional Recognition, says, “We’re very impressed by the Latino Child Care Association of Maryland and its mission to promote the quality of childcare and early education through the professional development of early childhood educators. The Council celebrates and respects the demographics and diversity in the early childhood educators’ population of our national and international community. We look at this agreement as a model for others to emulate.”

Charo Torres, executive director of LCAM, says, “We are excited to collaborate with the Council for Professional Recognition to empower Spanish-speaking early childhood educators. The Latino community of educators needs this type of support. This partnership will provide invaluable resources and training to help our members achieve their CDA Credential, fostering professional growth and significantly improving the quality of care and education in our communities.”

Both nonprofits expect to soon launch a webinar schedule and other activities for promotional purposes.
