Getting to Know the Council

Meet Karen Ryan

Senior Manager, People & Culture

“Holding a credential means you have demonstrated competence in a particular field, and having your CDA® proves that you have the skills to provide high-quality learning for young children.”

What does it take to succeed in the human resources field? You have to care for people and want to bring out their best, like you have to do in the early childhood profession. And Karen’s experience spans both fields. She showed early on how much she cared about others by reading to her young kindergarten peers, and Karen went on to become a kindergarten teacher herself. In the classroom, Karen was thrilled when children did well, but she didn’t give up on those who fell behind, showing a sense of compassion that she passed on to all the children she served. The motto of her classroom was “K is for Kindergarten Kids Being Kind,” something all children should know. And educators who earn a CDA, as Karen has seen, understand the value of teaching children to have empathy and compassion.

These qualities also encourage teamwork, collaboration and a sense of belonging, Council values that Karen supports as a member of our People and Culture team. And Karen picked up her personal culture of kindness from her mother while she was growing up. That makes Karen a great mom to her two girls, both now in their twenties, and a caring owner to her three labrador retrievers, Jasper, Sam and Hiccup. When she’s not occupied with her daughters, dogs and work, Karen likes to travel, read books and pursue other enriching activities on her bucket list. Striking a work-life balance matters, Karen is keenly aware as a professional in HR. And expanding her horizons, as she knows, helps to bring out her own personal best.
