Meet Lawrence

Controller

“Every soul has inherent dignity and the right to free agency.”

Lawrence Almengor has a message for early childhood teachers: “Earning a CDA® gives you the opportunity to shapes lives in the most formative years.” Lawrence has seen the impact that teachers can make, especially his second- and third-grade teachers. “They made me feel safe and helped me discover my gifts,” he recalls. “As I look back on my childhood, I realize how our teachers have touched children’s souls and tapped into their promise.”

So, Lawrence counts teachers among his heroes, which also include Corrie Ten Boom, a Dutch clockmaker and Christian writer who put the good of others before her own. She and her family hid Jews and helped them escape to freedom during World War II, a blessing for which the Ten Booms paid a high price. The Nazis caught Ten Boom’s family, and Corrie was sent to a concentration camp. But she didn’t regret her selfless act since she believed all people are equal before God.

That’s also a belief shared by Nelson Mandela, another of Lawrence’s great heroes. His claim to fame is that he sang happy birthday to Mandela during a U2 concert in Philadelphia. He also enjoyed hearing the music of Bono, whose name comes from the Latin for good. And hearing great music like this feeds Lawrence’s soul, leading him to strive in all parts of his life, whether it’s serving CDAs at the Council or being a dad to a 17 year old and  20-year-old twins. Lawrence also has two Golden Retrievers, one named Maisie and the other called Tov, a name that honors how Corrie Ten Boom helped the Jews. Tov happens to be the Hebrew word for good.
