Getting to Know the Council

Meet Mackenzie

Director of ECE Observation Systems

“The CDA credential is crucial because it sets a national  standard for early childhood professionals and spotlights the impact of high-quality learning in life’s most formative years.”

Mackenzie Pelland observed the difference that a skilled teacher can make when she was a high school student. She was struggling in a chemistry class until her teacher Dr. Bertch went above and beyond to ensure she understood the material in the class. “I had never had a teacher who cared so much about my success,” Mackenzie recalls, “and Dr. Bertch made a lasting impact on me. I realized that hard work would allow me to achieve things I never thought I was good at.”

Young children can also do more than they expect with the right teachers, Mackenzie realized as an adult while conducting child assessments at programs nationwide. She met many educators who made her think of Dr. Bertch, and now she has the chance to boost their ranks through her work at the Council. As director of ECE observation systems, she supports the Professional Development Specialists who assess rising CDAs’ skills. And it’s a role of which she is proud. “I feel honored to work at the Council since I’m convinced that credentialing has the power to transform early childhood education. We have high standards for awarding CDAs, and educators who earn our credential gain respect as the professionals that they are.”

CDAs know how to nurture children’s bodies and minds, as Mackenzie knows. She also knows the importance of nurturing your own body and mind, so she’s an avid reader and gets exercise by dancing, a favorite hobby since she was on her college dance team. She also loves walking her two dogs, Penny, a 4-year-old rescue Lab/Retriever mix, and Sammie, a 1-year-old Golden Mountain Dog. Being with them gives her another break from moving mountains in ECE and the chemistry she has with them is just right.
