Celebrating the Council for Professional Recognition’s 40th Anniversary: A Story of Impact and Leadership

March 25, 2025

March 2025 marks a milestone for the Council for Professional Recognition’s 40th anniversary. While we recognize early childhood educators’ invaluable contributions every day, this month is an opportunity to highlight key milestones, share inspiring stories, and reflect on the impact of the Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™ as we continue to commemorate the CDA’s 50th anniversary.

History

The Council for Professional Recognition was formed to improve the quality of early childhood education by recognizing and credentialing early childhood educators. It was established in 1985 as a response to the growing need for a national standard for early childhood professionals. The Council created the Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™, which provides a competency-based credential for educators working with young children, ensuring they have foundational quality standards of care and education.

Empowering Educators to Succeed

As the demand for high-quality early childhood education continues to grow, so does the number of educators earning their CDA credentials. Currently, Florida leads the nation in the number of CDA holders, demonstrating a strong commitment to professional development in early childhood education.

One of the inspiring CDA credential holders that the Council has featured is Larissa Sales-Sanchez, Florida native and founder of USTRIVE. Her online program helps early childhood educators overcome language barriers when working with dual-language learners.

“In general, young dual language learners go to school,” Sales-Sanchez explains, “and teachers tell them what to do, but the children don’t listen. The teachers think the children have behavioral problems, but the issue isn’t that they don’t want to follow instructions. The problem is that they don’t understand. And even if they do, they’re slow to respond because they’re so busy translating the words in their heads.”

Her work highlights the importance of ensuring that every child, regardless of language, has the opportunity to thrive.

A Record-Breaking Year for the CDA® Credential

The past year was monumental for the Council. Just before the 50th anniversary of the CDA, the Council awarded over 50,000 initial and renewal CDA credentials—the highest number in a single year in the history of the program. This milestone underscores the growing recognition of the CDA as the first best step in early childhood education.

Expanding Partnerships and Community Engagement

As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen the early childhood education community, the Council has formed collaborations with key organizations, we have highlighted a few here:

These partnerships and others are essential in providing professional development and ensuring that educators receive the support they need to succeed.

Looking Ahead

As we celebrate the Council for Professional Recognition’s 40th anniversary, we honor the dedication of early childhood educators and reaffirm our commitment to supporting their professional journeys. The impact of the Council and the CDA reaches far beyond the classroom, transforming the lives of children, families, and communities.
