Honoring National Developmental Disabilities Month

March 5, 2025

March is National Developmental Disabilities Month, a time to highlight and celebrate inclusive early childhood programs where children and families are thriving. The Council for Professional Recognition’s CEO Dr. Calvin Moore, Jr. states, “All children can reap benefits from inclusive education. It opens the world for children who have disabilities and serious health issues while opening the hearts and minds of their typically developing peers.”  All of us together can make a difference, elevating inclusive early care and education and sharing our stories of impact and positive change.

Competency Connections

Did you know the CDA® Competency Standards provide essential anchors for inclusive teaching in early childhood care and education?

Each CDA® Competency Goal presents effective practices for supporting children with disabilities and developmental delays and positive, responsive, and cooperative relationships with families. CDA earners observe and evaluate children’s progress and provide appropriate resources, referrals, and accommodations, including Individual Family Service Plans for children birth to age three and an Individualized Education Plans for preschool and school-age children. They implement legal and ethical responsibilities and take a strengths-based approach supporting learning and development, including children with autism spectrum disorder. In early childhood programs across the states and territories, teachers who hold a CDA credential are dedicated to excellence in inclusive teaching and fostering productive family partnerships.

How Does the CDA Credential Elevate Inclusive Practices?

The CDA competency goals provide a robust framework for ensuring inclusive programs advance children’s physical and intellectual competence through developmentally appropriate learning experiences. CDA earners demonstrate their knowledge, skills, and abilities by documenting and reflecting on their practice in the CDA® Professional Portfolio Family Resource Guide Goal IV, establishing positive and productive relationships with families. They anchor each of the CDA® Competency Goals’ content, theory, and practice with understanding of principles of child development and learning. The core competencies include understanding of individual variation, developmental expectations for children from birth through age 5, children with disabilities, cultural influences on development, and early brain development.

The CDA® Credential™ sets the professional standard of excellence for early childhood education. It ensures educators demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of child development, effective teaching practices, and dedication to creating nurturing, stimulating learning environments for all children.

Did you know?

      • Nearly one of six or about 17 percent of children are estimated to have a developmental disability.
      • More than half of preschool children with disabilities received early childhood special education services in settings separate from their peers.
      • Early developmental screening continues to lag far behind recommendations, with only one third of children receiving recommended screenings, with great disparity across states.
      • There are wide gaps in access to high-quality services and inclusive early childhood programs based on a child’s disability, race and ethnicity, language, and geographic and economic circumstances.
      • Educators with CDAs are more likely to engage in developmentally appropriate practice with all children.

Don’t forget! The sooner, the better. The sooner we intervene and provide inclusive and nurturing support for young children, the greater are the opportunities for them to succeed!
