Council Letter

September 25, 2024

Dear Colleagues,

Let’s join in a celebration of diversity and culture. It’s Hispanic Heritage Month, a time packed with concerts, festivals, art exhibits and parades. One intent of the month is to showcase the culture of Mexico, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and other Latin countries. Another, and more important goal, is to recognize the way “Hispanic Americans have enriched our nation with the strength of closely knit families and proud communities,” as President George H.W. Bush said in 1989 when he declared the period from September 15 to October 15 as an official time to honor Hispanics in our country.

This year, the theme for the celebration is “Pioneers of Change: Shaping the Future.” And few people do more to shape the future than those in the early childhood field, where Hispanic teachers make up over 16 percent of the workforce. They play a key role in our nation’s diverse classrooms, where one in four children is Hispanic, and the Council wants our Hispanic early childhood teachers to have the skills they need to help young learners from all cultural backgrounds make their own futures bright.

We share this goal with the Latino Child Care Association of Maryland (LCAM) and the Council just signed a pioneering agreement with LCAM to increase the number of Spanish-speaking CDAs. The agreement answers a strong need in Maryland where 12 percent of the population is Hispanic and nearly 9 percent speak Spanish at home. It also honors LCAM’s efforts to build diversity in our field, says Council CEO Dr. Calvin Moore. “We’re impressed by LCAM’s mission to promote quality early learning through professional growth of early childhood teachers and look on this agreement as a model to follow.”

Another model that deserves attention is the ECE department at Montgomery College, an official Hispanic-serving institution. So, this month we feature a profile on Nelida Andres, a native of Spain and one of the department’s directors. Nelida has played a key role in securing grants to help students earn a CDA® and convincing the administration to count the credential for credits toward an associate degree. She also guides students on how to open a child care business, urges them to go on with their education and gets personal satisfaction from their success. “When I get phone calls from students telling me they’ve found great jobs,” she says, “I feel good that I’ve made someone’s life better. So, I’m willing to do whatever it takes to help our students move forward in their careers.”

That’s also the goal of the Horizons program at Bright Horizons, where they’ve supported nearly 4,000 people in earning a CDA®. The program serves a diverse group of educators, including many Hispanic ECE professionals, explains MaryEllen Lyles, senior manager of program development, as we feature her in this month’s CDA Investor Impact Series. And the way Bright Horizons invests in its staff’s professional growth makes it stand out as a pioneer. “Unlike your typical reimbursement program, Horizons pays all costs upfront for educators to earn their CDA® or college degree,” MaryEllen says. “That has made a major impact by changing the lives of Bright Horizons staff who never dreamed they’d have the chance for an education.”

And the Council is also committed to changing lives, as you’ll see when you read Model Leader of the Month: Dr. Calvin Moore. Learn his thoughts on the culture and core values he embraces to empower Council staff and build strong teams. Then turn to his latest blog, Culture and Confidence. In it, Dr. Moore notes that one in three babies will be Hispanic by 2061, and Hispanic teachers have cultural insights and first-hand experience that can guide us as we build a sense of inclusion and belonging in the classroom. Doing so demands that we research and respect parents’ beliefs, shape curricula based on their values and support our multicultural early childhood workforce. These steps will help us build a closer connection with Hispanic children—and with all the diverse young learners—who are the future of our nation.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month,

The Council for Professional Recognition
