Collaborating with the Council: Michigan and the CDA

By Robin Zeiter, Professional Development Specialist, Office of Early Childhood Education, Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement and Potential

In Michigan, we are thrilled to have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education’s Best Practices Clearinghouse for our work with career and technical education (CTE) high school students in the education career pathway. Students pursuing this pathway are part of our Future Proud Michigan Educator LAUNCH initiative. LAUNCH is designed to build a pipeline of early childhood educators who meet the requirements to earn their Child Development Associate® (CDA) Credential™ in high school.

The breadth of the national CDA® credential, coupled with the support the Council provides for high school CTE pathways, made selecting the CDA as the early education credential for our students the perfect choice. In addition, the CDA is a critical component of our state’s early childhood system. The CDA is recognized in our career pathway as the first professional level and is recognized in child care licensing, state PreK and Great Start to Quality, our state’s quality recognition and improvement system.

We embrace collaboration in our state partnership with the Council. It has been wonderful to have communication and marketing support as we build our state cadre of Professional Development Specialists. Access to data to inform benchmarks and decision making has been extremely beneficial to our continued work. As Michigan moves to PreK for All, the CDA is central to building a competent workforce. Our state-funded PreK model requires a minimum of a CDA to serve in the role of associate teacher. As we look to expand PreK to serve an additional 32,000 children, we anticipate needing over 3,000 additional CDA-qualified individuals to serve as associate teachers in new PreK classrooms. We look forward to continuing our collaboration with the Council to support CDA attainment in our state.
