Celebrating National Children’s Day: A Guide for Families with Young Children

June 7, 2024

National Children’s Day is a special occasion dedicated to celebrating the joys and innocence of childhood. For parents with young children under the age of 5, it’s an opportunity to spend quality time together, creating a bond and memories that will last a lifetime. In this blog, we’ll explore the origins of National Children’s Day, why it matters, and provide some fun and meaningful ways families can celebrate with their little ones.

The Origins of National Children’s Day and Why It Matters

National Children’s Day, celebrated on the second Sunday of June in the United States, has a rich history that dates back to the 19th century. The idea of dedicating a day to children was first proposed by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard of the Universalist Church of the Redeemer in Chelsea, Massachusetts, in 1856. The idea caught on, and soon other communities started observing a similar day. Over time, it evolved into what we now know as National Children’s Day.

The primary aim of National Children’s Day is to recognize the importance of children in our lives and to promote their well-being. It serves as a reminder to value the contributions of children to society now and in the future, and ensure their needs are met.

Specifically, National Children’s Day aims to increase:

  1. Recognition of Children’s Rights: It highlights the significance of children’s rights and the need to protect and nurture them.
  2. Quality Time: It encourages parents and guardians to spend dedicated time with their children, strengthening family bonds.
  3. Awareness: It raises awareness about the issues children face globally, such as education, health, and safety.
  4. Celebration of Childhood: It celebrates the joys of childhood and the potential that each child holds for the future.

How Families Can Celebrate National Children’s Day with Young Children

Celebrating National Children’s Day with children under 5 can be easy and fun. Some ideas include:

  • Planning a Family Picnic
Pack a picnic basket with your little one’s favorite snacks and head to a local park. Bring along a blanket, some bubbles, and soft toys. Enjoy the sunshine, play simple games, and relish the outdoor fun together.

  • Creating Art Together
Set up a mini arts and crafts station at home. Use washable paints, markers, colored paper, and stickers. Let your child explore their creativity with finger painting, making collages, or decorating homemade cards. Display their artwork proudly around your home.

  • Reading Books and Telling Stories
Visit your local library or bookstore and let your child pick out a few picture books. Spend time reading together and use different voices for the characters to make the experience engaging. Encourage your child to tell their own stories, even if they’re just starting to speak. You can also use puppets or stuffed animals to act out the stories. You can also check out episodes of the Council Reading Corner on our Instagram page to watch as Council leaders share their favorite books through a pre-recorded story time. Our most recent episode features the Council’s Manager of Information Technology, Yong Kwon, reading Corduroy in both English and Korean.

  • Baking Simple Treats Together
Head to the kitchen and bake some easy treats with your child. Simple recipes like cookies, muffins, or homemade pizza are perfect for little hands. Let them mix ingredients, use cookie cutters, and decorate with sprinkles. Baking together is not only fun but also teaches your child valuable motor and math skills.

  • Going on Outdoor Adventures
Plan a gentle outdoor adventure such as a nature walk, visiting a nearby farm, or going to the beach. Exploring nature together can be an exciting and educational experience for young children. Bring along a small bag to collect interesting leaves, stones, or shells. You can also do garden work together. • Planning Family Movie Time
Choose a selection of family-friendly movies or animated shows and create a cozy viewing environment at home. Pop some popcorn, gather blankets and pillows, and enjoy watching movies together. Keep it short and sweet to match your child’s attention span.

  • Creating a Sensory Play Area
Set up a sensory play area with items like water beads, playdough, or a rice bin. Include scoops, spoons, and small toys for them to explore. Sensory play is great for young children’s cognitive and motor development and can keep them engaged for hours.

  • Hosting a Mini Playdate
Invite a few of your child’s friends or neighbors over for a mini playdate. Set up different play stations with toys, building blocks, and puzzles. Provide age-appropriate snacks and let the children enjoy each other’s company while you interact with other parents. This fosters a safe, comfortable, supported environment for your little ones to grow their social and communication skills.

  • Visiting a Petting Zoo or Aquarium
Plan a trip to a local petting zoo or aquarium. These places offer hands-on experiences and exhibits that are both fun and educational for young children. Seeing animals up close can be a magical experience for little ones and can be a good way to spend time together.

  • Creating a Time Capsule
Spend the day creating a time capsule with your child. Include drawings, letters, photos, and small keepsakes that represent your child’s current interests and milestones. Bury it in the backyard or store it in a safe place to open in the future. It’ll be fun to open together when the time is right.By engaging in these activities and more, you’ll not only create lasting memories but also reinforce the bond you share with your little ones. Celebrate the joy of childhood and make this National Children’s Day a special one!
